From all the Nations

[ ]Asher Bachar BaNu MeKkol HaAmim.

– Mommy!!! Where are we from?

– No Sarah, you must ask: where have we not been?

Deuteronomy 26:5
Then you shall declare before the LORD your God: “My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous.

Genesis 11:31
Terah took his son Abram , his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.

Wikipedia, Ur:

Ur was a city in ancient Sumer, located at the site of modern Tell el-Mukayyar in Iraq‘s Dhi Qar Governorate. Once a coastal city near the mouth of the then Euphrates river on the Persian Gulf, Ur is now well inland, south of the Euphrates on its right bank, 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) from Nasiriyah, Iraq. It is close to the site of ancient Eridu. Ur was a Sumerian city-state.

Ur was located near the easternmost “point” in the fertile crescent.

According to one estimate, Ur was the largest city in the world from c. 2030 to 1980 BC. Its population was approximately 65,000.

Wikipedia, Har(r)an:

A very ancient city which was a major Assyrian commercial, cultural, and religious center, Harran is a valuable archaeological site. It is often identified with Haran, the place in which Abraham lived before he reached Canaan, and with the Haran of Ezekiel 27:23, a city which traded with Tyre.

In its prime Harran was a major Assyrian city which controlled the point where the road from Damascus joins the highway between Nineveh and Carchemish. This location gave Harran strategic value from an early date. It is frequently mentioned in Assyrian inscriptions as early as the time of Tiglath-Pileser I, about 1100 BC, under the name Harranu (Akkadian harrānu, “road, path; campaign, journey”).

To put these data into perspective, it means that Abraham was an Iraqi, a Mesopotamian, an Aramean, from an area of the world at a time that it was near the end of the first and largest civilization of the then known world. in another word, Abraham is the offspring of a melting pot.

Likely the promise of God is that he will be the father of many nations, not just one ‘tribe’:

Genesis 17:3

Abram fell face-down, and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram [Exalted Father] ; your name will be Abraham, [Father of Many] for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.

But let’s consider further:

Genesis 25:19

This is the account of Abraham’s son Isaac.
Abraham became the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram [Northwest Mesopotamia] and sister of Laban the Aramean.

So Isaac went back to marry from  his family, Aramean, and so did Jacob:

Genesis 28

1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed [a] him and commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman. 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram, [b] to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.

Yet the sons did marry into the locale, the other nations:

Genesis 38

Judah and Tamar

1 At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah. 2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and lay with her; 3 she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.[  ]

6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

Genesis 46:19

The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:
Joseph and Benjamin. 20 In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.

so in fact the half-tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim are half-Egyptian!

What then will have happened in the following 400 and so years in Egypt?

Major intermingling between Jacob’s descendants and any other people whom they would come across, as this verse testifies:

Exodus 6:15

The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. These were the clans of Simeon.

1 Chronicle 7:14

The descendants of Manasseh:
Asriel was his descendant through his Aramean concubine. She gave birth to Makir the father of Gilead. 15 Makir took a wife from among the Huppites and Shuppites. His sister’s name was Maacah.

Numbers 12:1

[ Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses ] Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite.

There is more:

Joshua 13:13

But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur and Maacah, so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.

In fact David married the daughter of  one of their kings:

1 chronicles 3:2a [The sons of king David]

The third, Absalom the son of Maacah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

Joshua 14:13

Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.

– KENEZITE – ke’-nez-it (qenizzi; Kenezaios): the King James Version in Gen 15:19 and the Revised Version (British and American) uniformly, spell “Kenizzite.” The Kenezites were the clan whose name-father was KENAZ (which see). Their land, along with that of their Canaanite tribes, was promised to Abram (Gen 15:19). To this clan belonged Jephunneh, the father of Caleb (Nu 32:12; Josh 14:6,14). It had evidently been absorbed by the tribe of Judah. If the Kenezites went down with Jacob into Egypt, they may have become identified with his family there.

Egypt WAS the new melting pot of the time: Cushites, Greeks, Phoenicians, Africans, Mesopotamians, Indians, Arabs, and any other nomadic tribes of trading persuasion. Egypt was the center of civilization, the Paris, the New York, the Rome of its time.  And the Israelites naturally inter-married much like Jews are married today to any people from any other nation. It has always been and will always be:

1 Chronicles 2:34

Sheshan had no sons—only daughters.
He had an Egyptian servant named Jarha. 35 Sheshan gave his daughter in marriage to his servant Jarha, and she bore him Attai.

Ruth 1:4
They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years.

Even as the commandment prohibited it:

Deuteronomy 23:3
No Ammonite or Moabite or any of his descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, even down to the tenth generation.

Yet it was forgiven, since Ruth is considered  a matriarch.

Let’s not forget Rahab:

Joshua 6:25

But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

But who are the Moabites:

Genesis 19:36

So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab [g] ; he is the father of the Moabites of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi [h] ; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.

And we all know Salomon’s example:

1 Kings 11:1

[ Solomon’s Wives ] King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.

Even in the army, the mighty men of David:

1 Chronicles 11:46

Eliel the Mahavite,
Jeribai and Joshaviah the sons of Elnaam,
Ithmah the Moabite

In that fact there is a major purpose to all of that. That is what we’ll explore next.

Haven’t we seen then that the Israelite are really a gathering of people from different nations, from Mesopotamia’s melting pot to Egypt’s melting pot? Haven’t then the tribes continued to mix?

1 Kings 8:53
For you singled them out from all the nations of the world to be your own inheritance, just as you declared through your servant Moses when you, O Sovereign LORD, brought our fathers out of Egypt.”

So what is God’s plan?

It makes sense to establish that God has picked individuals from many nations over the course of time to gather them into one people, to train them to His service, and to send them back to their nations and others to teach and witness His existence and worship. See this:

Leviticus 25:55

for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

The aliens always were present within the Israelite ranks. All the laws applied mostly equally to the Israelite as to the aliens there present:

Deuteronomy 31:11

When all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law before them in their hearing. 1213 Their children, who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the aliens living in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law.

Deuteronomy 26:11
And you and the Levites and the aliens among you shall rejoice in all the good things the LORD your God has given to you and your household.

Deuteronomy 10:19
And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt.

Numbers 15:16
The same laws and regulations will apply both to you and to the alien living among you.’ “

Leviticus 24:22
You are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born. I am the LORD your God.’ “

Not only that but God spoke about Israel’s territory, according to :

Ezequiel 47:21

“You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You are to allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the aliens who have settled among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. 23 In whatever tribe the alien settles, there you are to give him his inheritance,” declares the Sovereign LORD.

Which opens up the discussion about whether there is any difference between the Israelite and the non-Israelite:

1 The Israelites are mixed from their inception,

2 The Stranger in the land must abide by the same rules,

3 The Stranger in the land has the same inheritance rights;

So the Alien within the Israelites is to be an Israelite, not only that but it is a Goal:

Joshua 8:33
All Israel, aliens and citizens alike, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD, facing those who carried it—the priests, who were Levites.

Psalm 146:9
The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

and so:

Isaiah 14:1
The LORD will have compassion on Jacob; once again he will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land. Aliens will join them and unite with the house of Jacob.

indeed, as God’s representatives, the code of ethic is:

Deuteronomy 4:6

Observe [the laws and decrees] carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” 7What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him?

and so the Israelites accordingly are the messengers to teach about God:

Isaiah 42:6
“I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles

2 Samuel 22:50
Therefore I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to your name.

1 Chronicles 16:8
Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.

1 Chronicles 16:24
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

As God had said:

Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Psalm 47:8
God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.

Psalm 67:2
that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.

Psalm 72:11
All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him.

Psalm 72:17
May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun. All nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed.

as a result:

Esther 8:17

In every province and in every city, wherever the edict of the king went, there was joy and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebrating. And many people of other nationalities became Jews because fear of the Jews had seized them.

for in the end:

Psalm 98:2
The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations.

Isaiah 2:2
In the last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.

Isaiah 2:4
He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

Isaiah 56:7
these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”

Jeremiah 3:17
At that time they will call Jerusalem The Throne of the LORD, and all nations will gather in Jerusalem to honor the name of the LORD. No longer will they follow the stubbornness of their evil hearts.

Isaiah 66:18

“And I, because of their actions and their imaginations, am about to come and gather all nations and tongues, and they will come and see my glory.” 19 I will set a sign among them, and I will send some of those who survive to the nations—to Tarshish, to the Libyans and Lydians (famous as archers), to Tubal and Greece, and to the distant islands that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory. They will proclaim my glory among the nations.

Zechariah 8:22
And many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the LORD Almighty and to entreat him.”

This being established, we’ll understand that an Israelite is a worshiper of God united to the descendants of Jacob whether by blood or by adoption, in these circumstances, all the nations who believe and worship can be called ‘Jews’ – Yehudim, the praisers of God- and can become a part of and inherit their share of Israel, by the bible’s own definitions:

Psalm 69:36
the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.

Proverbs 17:2
A wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son, and will share the inheritance as one of the brothers.

and therefore:

Zechariah 8:23
This is what the LORD Almighty says: “In those days ten men from all languages and nations will take firm hold of one Jew by the hem of his robe and say, ‘Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.’ “

That of course applies only to those who please God:

Isaiah 8:20
To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.

Jeremiah 3:19
“I myself said, ” ‘How gladly would I treat you like sons and give you a desirable land, the most beautiful inheritance of any nation.’ I thought you would call me ‘Father’ and not turn away from following me.

because being servants is not enough:

Ezekiel 46:16
” ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: If the prince makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his sons, it will also belong to his descendants; it is to be their property by inheritance. 17 If, however, he makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, the servant may keep it until the year of freedom; then it will revert to the prince. His inheritance belongs to his sons only; it is theirs.

Proverbs 13:9
The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.

Psalm 89:15
Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD.

Daniel 12:13
“As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.”
